World parrot refuge "a home for life or a home for death"?
The World Parrot Refuge claims to have has over 800 parrots. and is operated by the “For the Love Of Parrots Refuge Society” (FLOPRS). The parrot world Refuge is located in Combs BC. The question I ask is "are these birds being cared for properly" . I will present what I see and you can decide for yourself .I have spoken to Wendy at parrot refuge and she says her door is still open and they are taking in more birds . Does parrot world have more birds then they can care for ?
Oct 19th 2011 i made my concerns known to the parksville SPCA

These macaws are huddled under the sink , a dirty damp enviroment note the floor is wet and food and fruit on floors where the birds often eat
The first time I noted this broken window was early July 2011 ,My next visit was Oct 2011, the window of the bird outdoor flight in the front of the building is still broken and the broken area enlarged . Birds in the hospital area come outside threw this window. Parrots chew everything note the edge of the window where they chewed the pane.Besides a risk of injury to the birds, nights and mornings are very cold this time of year and parrots are very sensative to draft and the cold .
This bird is sitting on a bucket of cleaning fluid, note the detergant suds in the bucket , there is also a scrub brush in the bucket
Bird drinking the dirty scrub water with some sort of chemical cleaner in it .
This is the bird sick room , the hospital part of World Bird Refuge . note soap suds on floor and the bird on top of the white cage . I seen birds walking on the wet floor , picking wet seed and food off the detergant soaked floor.picking bits of food out of the soap on the floor . This picture was taken Oct18 2011
This is parrot worlds state of the art bird medical station . Picture take on another visit july 2011 this again is the bird sick room . this room is for sick birds ,The sick hospital room has been a filthy mess every time i visit.
I have not seen any heating lamps for plucked birds but have seen many "MANY" shivering plucked birds in damp conditions .
This poor fellow is in the large flight. a bird that plucks this severly needs to be in a foster home where there is some one to watch him constently and distract him from plucking , he could also use a collar or vest to protect him. This poor fellow could also use extra warmth. In my opinion the needs of this bird are not being met by world bird refuge.

These birds I was told by staff at World Bird Refuge had suffered malnutrition, . My question is if these birds are sick due to malnutrition why they are given a large dish of pasta noodles. Is this proper care of a bird with malnutrition?
In July when I took this picture, this bird had a large whole in the middle of its chest. In Oct when I visited this same bird still had a large open sore in the middle of his chest , has this bird been to a veterinarian ? How long has this bird had this condition? Three month for a sore to be open and not healing is a long time. This bird with the open wound is not collard, wearing a protective vest or kept in a clean sterile place. This bird in Oct was running around on the floor in the entrance area. This bird is not supervised and watched non stop to assure he is not pecking at the sore. It is my opinion that some of the MANY sick birds at World Parrot Refuge need one on one care and from what I have witnessed they are not getting it .
This poor bird did not move or release his hold on this branch once for the half hour I was in the room at World parrot refuge. Note the distended stomach, ruffled feathers. This is not normal, this is a sick bird and I would guess he was in pain. I did not see him when I returned on my next visit. I can only hope he got the veterinarian care he needed and got better.
Several birds flew over and landed on me while I was at World Parrot Refuge an hour or so after I left I felt like I was being bitten , I seen a small red speck on my arm , it was a lice or mite of some kind . It dose not surprise me that the birds there are infested with mites and lice. This could account for the high rate of plucking and the inability of Parrot world to improve the condition of some of the puckers.
With the high number of birds at World Parrot Refuge it would be unrealistic to think that not one of the 800 + birds brought in would have lice or mites . My question is what is World Parrot world doing to treat this problem?
